1938年時点でのヒトラーの評価は、ドイツの歴史家ヨアヒム・フェストの次の言葉に示されている。現代人からは想像もできないほどの高評価である。
「もし1938年末にヒトラーが暗殺されたり、あるいは事故死でもしていれば、彼をドイツ史上最高の政治家の一人とみなすことに躊躇する者はほとんどいないであろう」 (渡辺惣樹著「誰が第二次世界大戦を起こしたのか」P55)
